INDIAN RECIPE: Split Yellow Pea Dal
Another healthy recipe from Hodmedod’s for our January detox. A delectable accompaniment to rice or bread, this vegetarian, Indian split yellow pea dal is incredibly easy to make - you can even use split chick peas should you like your dal a little smoother…
Cooking Time: Preparation time 3 hrs, 15 mins, cooking time 50 mins
150g dried split yellow peas (or split chick peas)
1 tbsp sunflower oil
2 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp ground turmeric
10 curry leaves
1 onion, sliced
1 large green or red chilli, sliced
3 crushed garlic cloves
1 tsp garam masala
3 large chopped tomatoes
Equipment Needed: Bowl, large pan, spatula, spoon
To speed up your cooking, soak the peas in cold water for 3 hours. Drain, rinse and place in a large pan. Add water, bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for approximately 30 minutes, or until soft. Season as required with salt and pepper.
Heat the sunflower oil, add the spices and curry leaves and fry over a medium heat (until the mustard seeds start to pop!). Quickly after, add in the onion, chillies and garlic and stir well. Cook for another 3 minutes and add the garam masala.
Mix thoroughly and tip this into the cooked dal with the chopped tomatoes. Simmer and cook for another 10 minutes, add more water if the mixture becomes too thick. Add salt and pepper as needed.
Remove from heat and serve with lemon juice and fresh coriander (but only if you want to!).
